5 Copywriting Fundamentals for Blogs

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 08:11 PM PDT

Most people think of copywriting as a tool of advertising where the copywriter engages in the fine art of writing to sell a particular product or service. However, it is actually more than that. According to Copywriting.com, copywriting is "the art and science of writing words to promote a product, a business, a person or an idea; and carefully selecting, editing, weaving and constructing those words in a way that they’ll persuade the reader into taking a specific and measurable action."

The keyword in that definition is ‘persuade‘. Selling your business to potential customers is a form of persuasion, but that kind of advertising is only a subset of what copywriting entails. Blogging about your opinions can be a form of persuasion; to persuade the readers to your view, to increase the traffic flow to your site, to motivate others, etc. As a freelance blogger myself, I firmly believe in the ability of words to inspire and even change people’s lives.

Whatever the purpose of your copywriting is, there are certain fundamentals of copywriting which we can abide to and hook our readers, and here are a couple of them.

1. Making it Conversational

Unlike other forms of writings like news writing or novels, copywriting tends to get more personal with the reader by making it seem like a conversation. Copywriting for blogs means that it may be read by thousands of people, yet you must assume that you’re writing only to a single person. Why? Because any reader who stumbles across your post would be reading it by him or herself at any one time. He or she is forming that connection with what you wrote and you don’t want to break the reading flow.

personal 5 Copywriting Fundamentals for Blogs

That kind of connection is especially crucial when you’re trying to persuade your reader. You need to ‘speak’ in their language and relate to them with personal experience, observations, etc. Emotions are unique to us humans, so be sure to add them to your writings as well. Other ways of maintaining the conversation-like atmosphere is to have short paragraphs and limit one idea to each one. This ensures the flow of the ‘conversation’ remains unbroken and ideas stay absorbable and comprehensible.

2. Clear, Concise & Get to the Point

When it comes to copywriting for blogs, these Internet readers are much more different from offline readers. Given the wealth of information available to them within clicks of their mouse, they can easily skip from one site to another if they find the first one boring. It gets boring when the blog offers many words but little information.

clear and concise 5 Copywriting Fundamentals for Blogs

The first rule then, again, is to keep sentences and paragraphs short. This will not only make your ideas clearer, but also turn your entire article into neatly-organized, easy-to-read chunks. Add in headings and subheadings so that the reader can tell the organization of your writings upon first look. If the readers couldn’t immediately identify the general structure of your article, chances are that they would try other sites that are more systematic.

Minimize the use of jargons as well; it hinders the understanding of the article. Just remember that when it comes to the Internet, nobody wishes to waste time figuring out information. Everyone wants it quick and fast.

3. Customer-focused

Although the term ‘customer’ seems to imply that you’re selling a service or a product, it can also be generalized to selling ideas, solutions and knowledge to your customers, a.k.a your readers. Therefore, you need to assess who your target audience is and what their needs are. Remember that you are selling and persuading others, so what you write must emphasize on how your customers can benefit from reading it.

What kind of information do your readers want to receive from your blog? Tips or solutions on how to troubleshoot their computer problems? Something that inspires and motivates their lives? These will be answered once you understand who your target audience is. From then on, you will know what are the topics that are sought after by them, down to the details like how you should structure your articles. Your research (if any) for topics will be more effective in the sense you will know beforehand what interest them and what does not.

4. Start Off with Good Headlines

What is the first thing any reader will notice in any article? The headline! To encourage the reader to read on, your headline must be catchy enough to motivate further reading. As with sentences, keep your headline short enough (preferably seven words or less) so that the reader can figure out what it’s about upon first reading.

headlines 5 Copywriting Fundamentals for Blogs

There are many ways you can lure the readers on. You may use a witty headline or something that pique curiosity. The most common (and perhaps even foolproof) method is to state the benefit. After all, as per #3, anyone reading the article is wondering ‘what’s in it for me’. Having the benefit revealed right from the start would spur anyone to read on so long as it’s what the readers want. Such headlines are straight to the point and clear to Internet readers, which we all know from point #2, are ‘fickle-minded’ individuals.

If you would like to find out about the various kinds of headlines you can use, do check out 10 Headline Formulas That Work Like Magic. That’s a pretty captivating headline too, don’t you think so?

5. Proofreading

Practice makes perfect, so does proofreading. In any kind of writing, it is of critical importance that the writer re-reads the entire thing and make sure that it flows. Without such a flow, it is hard for the reader to establish a connection with the writer via the words, sentences and paragraphs. Persuasion requires the reader to relate to what you say.

proofreading 5 Copywriting Fundamentals for Blogs

Apart from that, the reliability of the article is less likely to be questioned if the spelling and grammar are correct. This has implications on the number of readers who will subsequently return back to your blog for more entries.

Other than proofreading by yourself, why not have someone else read your post? Sometimes when you spend too much time working on a specific entry, your mindset and perspective become rigid. You may fail to see your own mistakes and may not be able to detect a lack of flow. Having another person who has not seen your article in any way would allow the person to provide unbiased, objective and constructive feedback.

Social Networks: How to Keep Up Like a Pro

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 02:01 AM PDT

Before we begin, I should really mention one thing: the three major social network platforms I am referring to here are Google+, Facebook and Twitter. Inevitably, there will be comments on this kind of article that will begin naming off the many other sites categorized under the big social media umbrella, be it Tumblr or YouTube or some obscure open-source social networking platform that only one in every 10 hipster has heard of.

I am aware that others exist, and some might be preferred. Also, there are plenty of popular niche sites like those names above that are huge. But when thinking of social networking, it is hard not to see those three at the top of the list. Therefore, they are the ones we will be covering in this article. They are also probably what 99 percent of those reading this are using or addicted to.

With that out of the way, welcome! As a social media user of the Internet era, there is a good chance you have at least one account in any of the three mentioned above. There is a better chance that you have at least two, and a select few of you have all three. You have no reason to feel ashamed. This phenomenon is part of the current social media obsession, one that is unlikely to disappear. Unlike the all-but-extinct originals like Friendster and MySpace, these three sites offer something that managed to tick the right boxes and become the standard on which all social networks are judged. There are little links at the end of articles for you to share what you read automatically. You can now sign in using your social networking profile to make comments, and every mobile device in existence, from even the cheapest phones and WiFi media players, now gives you the capability to browse and update your social networks.

Keeping Up With It All

With so many profiles and different people on each one, it can be hard to keep up with them. It becomes more of a chore, which is besides the point. Using a social network should be fun. It’s a good way to communicate with people from around the world, and update your friends and family about major events in your life, all at once. It’s also a good way to get to know people better and share things from around the Web.

Of course, you can use the link boxes to share something on each site, one after another. But what about status updates? Do you have to go through each one individually? For a while we got a nifty little sync feature. But that automatically shares updates on both Twitter and Facebook, which wasn’t what users wanted. Plus, it had nothing for Google+, which had not yet been released. Instead, it had an additional sync for MySpace, which next to no one uses anymore.

Apps for Linking Accounts

The way to do it now is through syncing apps. These work by allowing you to select the desired status updates through the program and publish them on any of the three social networking platforms. Some let you do it simultaneously, which is especially great for those with fanpages or those who want to post frequent updates on changes to blogs, sites or content uploads. There are so many of these out there that you could just put in a Google search and pick one at random. But if you want to know what the best are, these 15 are the most suggested, well-loved and used apps out there.

Extended Share

Extended Share is a great extension for Google Chrome, simply because it offers compatibility for a large number of social networking sites. not only Facebook and Twitter are covered, but so are LinkedIn, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest and about half a dozen more. It provides a popup that asks for permission to share for each selected site, and post to them simultaneously. Sadly, there is no equivalent for other browsers, as it was made specifically for Google+ users who want to branch out to other accounts. But if you have Chrome you should enjoy the full use of this add-on.

Facebook to Twitter

If you want a full link program that will totally tie together both accounts, Facebook to Twitter is a good one. But it also isn’t that customizable, which is still a major downer. You will get all updates, and it doesn’t always let you post to just one. This might just be a glitch I have personally experienced, however. Others have reported good results.

G++

G++ is a bit better than Google+Tweet if you have a Facebook account. Using it, you can post to both Facebook and Twitter from Google+ directly. Each also shows in your stream, with a small icon indicating which of the three it comes from. This allows you to like, comment on or repost other people’s status updates or shares without having to sign into each one.

Google+Tweet

As the name suggests, Google+Tweet is a Twitter client that allows you to see your timeline, new posts and tweet updates from your Google+ account. It has a fair list of features and is easy to use, though it has the drawback of only being applicable for Twitter and Google+. If those happen to be the only social media sites you use, you should be well set with this app.

Hellotxt

Doodle, update your social media profiles, search maps or send anything from the web from your texting service. Hellotxt is a great app that is a little different from all the others and free to sign up for. It's worth a look.

Helper for Google+

Helper for Google+ allows you to post status updates on multiple sites but also gives you a full widget that gives you desktop and SMS notifications, translates posts in other languages and allows for posts and profile searches straight from the app. In addition to this, it connects with Pinterest, Delicious and other handy sites that you probably use on a regular basis. This one has been around for a while and just seems to get better with every update. So if you have Google Chrome, be sure to check it out.

HootSuite

Like TweetDeck, HootSuite is a popular desktop application that works by monitoring your social media activity and so much more. Great for power users that need a real boost in efficiency, it lets you manage various social media profiles like the three mains plus others, analyze data, monitor brand mentions, do collaborative team reports and marketing strategies etc. It has a free plan and an unlimited plan for $5.99 per month.

Later Bro

Later Bro is another popular one. Working with both Twitter and Facebook, it lets you schedule status updates far in advance, based on both day and time. It simply connects with your accounts and then lets you create as many updates as you like for either or both.

ManageFlitter

ManageFlitter is a super simple page you just bookmark and use as you need. It connects to both your Google+ and Twitter accounts and posts the same status on both. That is literally all it does. It might not seem like much, but it is great if you are on a shared computer and don’t want to download or install anything.

Ping.fm

Ping.fm is your ultimate social profile manager, simply because it covers nearly everything around. It is compatible with Jaiku, Bebo, Yahoo Profiles, AIM Status, WordPress, Photobucket and dozens of others. It has an SMS or direct app use feature for your phone. It also covers all instant messengers. It basically packs everything into one neat little application for your convenience.

Seesmic

From Facebook to LinkedIn, if you want an app that will let you run things from your phone, Seesmic Ping is that program. There is a mobile, desktop and web-based app to let you keep track of any device. You can analyze data, schedule posts, watch over each profile and more through the service. Think of it as a slightly less feature-heavy HootSuite for your phone and computer combined.

Selective Tweets

Located on the Facebook Apps page, Selective Tweets allows you to update your Facebook from Twitter. All you have to do is connect the two accounts through the app, and you are on your way. It is one of the easiest and most straightforward programs for the purpose, and you don’t have to download anything.

SmartTweets

SmartTweets is another app that does the same as Selective Tweets. However, it automatically goes through the tweets you have and removes anything that is retweeted, unless you specify otherwise. So only relevant tweets will be shared with Facebook and vice versa. It hasn't had an update in a while, but the app itself is still good.

TweetDeck

Made for power users, TweetDeck is one of the more popular desktop applications that follow Twitter posts and show you useful updates and stats, and lets you organize everything for maximum efficiency. Of course, this doesn’t work on either Facebook or Google+. But it still deserves a mention because it makes using Twitter for marketing or other purposes more professionally centered.

Twitter on Facebook

The official app for linking accounts, Twitter on Facebook is simply the standard Twitter sync tool accessible through Facebook. You just press the button to go to your Twitter profile settings page and activate it. While it works, many people choose third-party apps because this one isn’t that customizable or feature heavy.

Conclusion

There are plenty of reasons to sign up for a social media profile on multiple sites. In order to take care of them, you can use various tools designed to make it easier to handle all the three major websites. Do you have a tool that’s not on the list, that you are especially fond of? 20+ Picturesque Shots of Rainbow

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 05:39 AM PDT

You know what they say about dark clouds, that there’s a silver lining in every one of them. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a one with seven colours instead of just the silver: a rainbow. It’s Nature’s way of telling us not to give up hope in times of adversity and despair because your luck will change after that.

Rainbows are all about hope and optimism. The spectrum of colors represent the beauty of the world and a beautiful rainbow shot can’t help but bring out the positivity in life that we sometimes need to believe in. We don’t always get to see perfectly arched rainbows like those we see in cartoons since rainbows exist in other forms too – it’s like Mother Nature colouring outside the lines.

We have here for you a compilation of beautiful rainbows against awesome backdrops. Be inspired!

Automate Your Dropbox Files With Actions

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 11:33 PM PDT

If you don’t know what Dropbox is, your online life is going to be a whole lot easier. With Dropbox, you can simply drop a file into its folder and have it sync automatically on the Cloud. Next thing you know, you can already access the file from all your other devices.

dropbox automator Automate Your Dropbox Files With Actions

Not only that, there are actually many other things you can do with Dropbox: File conversion, multiple cloud storage syncing, photo editing or even data encryption can be easily applied with a single file drop. That is, with a little help from Wappwolf Dropbox Automator, a free web application. It works by monitoring your defined folder in Dropbox, and can be set to trigger preferred actions to the new files you drop into the folder.

Dropbox Automator and features

Dropbox Automator provides easy automation to your files in selected folders, and the process is simple;

  1. Set which folder you want to set automation to.
  2. Set the actions you want to apply to the files saved in this folder.
  3. Dropbox Automator will trigger the actions when it finds the supported files in the selected folder.

There are many available ‘actions’ you can use, including converting files to PDF format without having to convert them on your own. The other things you can do with it include:

automator all actions Automate Your Dropbox Files With Actions

When you set an action to your folder, Dropbox Automator will start watching your folder. Whenever you save a file into the folder, it will automatically create a new folder called ‘Processed’ inside your selected folder – Dropbox > YourFolder > Processed.

automator processed Automate Your Dropbox Files With Actions

All files you save inside YourFolder will be transferred to Processed folder, where all the original files will be kept. Next, I will walk you through how to set actions to convert documents to PDF.

How to Automate actions in Dropbox

  1. To start automating actions whenever you move files to Dropbox, go to Wappwolf Dropbox Automator start page and click on the Try now button.
